Virtual Reality Movies: Mauthausen

Each panorama movie is available in two file sizes. The small movies display at the same size on your computer screen as the large movies, but the small movies do not allow you to zoom in on as much detail as the large movies do. All movies are a full circle (360 degrees) unless noted otherwise.

Mauthausen Center of Camp

[SMALL MOVIE] 500 K [LARGE MOVIE] 2.3 MB

This VR opens looking toward the sarcophagus monument in the middle of the camp street. The large white building to the right is the museum (formerly the sick quarters). The smaller light-colored building to the right was the jail/crematorium. The first green building was the camp kitchen and the second green building was the camp laundry. The following stone structure is the entrance gate to the upper camp. The final three buildings are hut 1 (orderly room, shoemaker's workshop, and brothel), hut 6 (housing for kitchen personel), and hut 11 (housing for children and adolescents).

Mauthausen Exterior

[SMALL MOVIE] 980 K [LARGE MOVIE] 2.8 MB

This 180 degree VR opens with a view of the surrounding countryside. The first building to be seen over the wall is the command headquarters, followed by the laundry, the kitchen, the jail/crematorium, and the sick quarters.

Mauthausen Garage Yard

[SMALL MOVIE] 656 K [LARGE MOVIE] 2.5 MB

This VR opens in the garage yard looking toward the outside. Rotate to the other end of the yard to view the command headquarters.

Mauthausen German Monument (former East German)

[SMALL MOVIE] 444 K [LARGE MOVIE] 1 MB

View a 180 degree VR of the monument to the victims of Mauthausen erected by the former East German gevernment. This memorial overlooks the quarry at Mauthausen and includes a quotation from Bertolt Brecht.

Mauthausen Quarry

[SMALL MOVIE] 764 K [LARGE MOVIE] 2.2 MB

This 180 degree view from the inside of the quarry opens at the "stairs of death." Moving to the right, the three tablets indicate the location of the so-called "parachute jump." Here laborers were forced to jump to their deaths without benefit of a parachute. At the extreme right of the movie, you will see the back of the East German monument sitting on top of the cliff.
