Today the students were introduced to fact families in mathematics. So what I did, is I had them incorporate the program Kid Pix to help us understand fact families better.

We did a little mini lesson to talk about fact families and about how the relationship is between addition and subtraction. And then, we had already worked with Kid Pix before so they were familiar with a lot of the different drawing tools on Kid Pix. So we had talked about drawing houses earlier. So today they drew their house and they divided it into four equal rooms and then up in the attic they took three numbers that were part of the fact family. Their assignment was to make a fact family using those three numbers. Two of the rooms have addition number sentences, and two of the rooms have subtraction number sentences.

It’s nice to see maybe a student that doesn’t quite understand it work with a student who understands the concept and they kind of help each other and learn from each other. They get different things out of it both ways.

  • Students will create visual representations of fact families using KidPix software.
  • They will develop fact families independently.
  • They will solve simple addition and subtraction problems.

Procedure

  • Students will learn how to use drawing tools to create visual representations of a house and create fact families as the teacher models the process using a laptop and LCD projector.
  • Students will then work in groups to create their own houses and fact families.
  • Then students are to create addition and subtraction problems using their fact families.

Technology Present

  • Desktop and laptop computers
  • LCD projector
  • Monitor
  • KidPix

Grade Level: K-2

Note: The TIM is about teaching, not technology. The placement of a lesson on the TIM is based entirely on the teaching practices demonstrated in the lesson and not on the specific technology employed. Effective pedagogy is our concern, not whether the tech involved is the latest, greatest, or most expensive. In fact, most of the sample videos were recorded some time ago as part of the original development of the Technology Integration Matrix. As you view these videos, focus on the teaching practices. When using the TIM-O to observe a lesson, remember that you can display the detailed indicators by clicking the tab on the right if you are completing a Matrix-based observation or are reviewing the TIM profile of a question-based lesson. The TIM Tools Admin Guide contains additional suggestions for observing a lesson and developing a TIM profile.
