[Teacher speaking to class] Inspiration is a concept… [Teacher voiceover]

This is international relations honors and its 9‐12. What we did today was I introduced some concept mapping software called Inspiration. I modeled how to use it using a current event and problems and solution. We created facts, discussed problems regarding those facts, and we came up with solutions to address how to predict what’s going to happen with the problem itself. The topic we worked on today was the very timely manner of Iran’s nuclear weapons program, and whether or not it’s for nuclear energy or for its nuclear weapons, and what would happen as a result, and what we can predict is going to happen in the near future.

[Teacher addressing the class]
What other reason do we believe that they might use nuclear weapons? [Student speaking]
One of their priorities was to destroy Israel.
[Teacher speaking]
Ok.
[Teacher voiceover]

Now they’re taking their textbooks and the readings they have suppose to have done over the past week on basic theories of international relations; mainly, liberalism, realism, neo‐liberalism, neo‐realism. So they’ll be able to use a concept map to define what the different topics are, the different theories within those topics. And then I’m going to ask them at a later point to create Venn diagrams to discuss neo‐realism versus realism and neo‐liberalism versus liberalism.

I find that when I have done lessons with Inspiration in the past, where I’ve used it as a note taking tool, their scores on quizzes and essay tests are just remarkably going through the roof, because not only are they learning the material but they are learning how to organize it with their own mind.

Objectives

  • To gain knowledge of a current event (e.g., Iraq’s nuclear program-for energy or weapons?)
  • To create a concept map of their assigned reading.
  • To compare/contrast Neo-realism vs. Realism and Neo-liberalism vs. Liberalism.

Procedure

  • Teacher models how to use Inspiration software using a current event and problems and solutions.
  • Together as a class, add facts to concept map and discuss problems regarding those facts.
  • Class brainstorms solutions to address how to predicts what’s going to happen.
  • Individually, students use Inspiration to create a concept map of their assigned reading in textbook. They will define what the different topics are and the different theories within those topics.
  • Students will then create Venn diagrams to discuss Neo-Realism vs. Realism and Neo-Liberalism vs. Liberalism.

Technology Present

  • Laptops
  • Internet
  • Inspiration software
  • Textbook

Note: The TIM is about teaching, not technology. The placement of a lesson on the TIM is based entirely on the teaching practices demonstrated in the lesson and not on the specific technology employed. Effective pedagogy is our concern, not whether the tech involved is the latest, greatest, or most expensive. In fact, most of the sample videos were recorded some time ago as part of the original development of the Technology Integration Matrix. As you view these videos, focus on the teaching practices. When using the TIM-O to observe a lesson, remember that you can display the detailed indicators by clicking the tab on the right if you are completing a Matrix-based observation or are reviewing the TIM profile of a question-based lesson. The TIM Tools Admin Guide contains additional suggestions for observing a lesson and developing a TIM profile.
